About Us ~

Hi, I'm Sharon Allen and I would like to introduce myself, my husband, Peter Foote, and my daughter Chelsea. We have long thought of owning a small market and deli. Our idea has always been to have a market that provides fresh produce, fresh seafood, meats, local products and groceries – a market you think first of when you want fresh ingredients when you want to prepare a great meal , and a market where you can buy quality house made foods you can take home and simply reheat, for those nights when you don't feel like cooking but you want good food. Over time we have considered many different locations but they were always too small or too big, not in the right place, (downtown Montpelier), or just didn’t feel right. When we found this location for the Uncommon Market we knew we had found the right place to offer our unique vision of what a small market can be and we are loving it.

The Uncommon Market incorporates two things that the three of us love best, people and food. Our customers are wonderful and the opportunity to get to know such a broad cross section of people in our community means a lot to us. Though good food is often expensive our goal is to offer a range of prices so that anyone can come in and find good food within their budget, whether it's for a Wednesday night dinner or truly special occasion. In turn, whenever feasible, we offer foods produced in Vermont, the closer to home the better. See our Local Page for a list of local foods we sell.

The Uncommon Market is all about the food…

For breakfast try our unbeatable breakfast sandwiches, made with Vermont eggs, Vermont cheddar cheese, Boars Head sausage or bacon or Gimme Lean’s wonderful vegetarian sausage. We make our own muffins every morning, (seven days a week), or you can order a bagel and cream cheese or maybe get a Vermont Water Buffalo yogurt and a piece of fresh fruit. For lunch we feature (and adore) a full line of Boars’ Head cold cuts. For people who love deli meats there is no going back to any other cold cut once you have tried Boar’s Head. We offer every imaginable combination for lunch and a daily sandwich special. We also offer two soups every day and our soups are good enough to merit their own page, so look for more info there(just don’t miss the fish chowder!). Some days a sandwich isn’t enough and for those days you can pick up our home made lasagna, enchiladas, burritos, Italian meatloaf or any number of our prepared items.

Our Dinners, no matter how much or how little you want to cook….If you want to make a quick easy dinner you can buy a pound of fresh dry scallops, a jar of the delicious D’Medicai Alfredo sauce and a bag of the Al Dente lemon chive pasta and you have Alfredo del mare in fifteen minutes....If you don’t want to cook at all pick up our already prepared turkey enchiladas, a side of greens beans with toasted walnuts and two slices of our house-made chocolate cake....or if you want to indulge yourself in a leisurely bout of cooking you can pick up fresh seafood, pork, beef, chicken, tofu or pasta, choose from a wide selection of fresh herbs and vegetables, try the lemongrass or puff pastry in the freezer or the beautiful Arborio rice, or any of the many Latin and Asian ingredients we carry and chef it right up)

Parties, Hors D'oeuvres and snacks... We carry a wide selection of top quality frozen appetizers that would grace any gathering (and some great pizzas!). We pride ourselves on our selection of local and imported cheeses, salsas, spreads and dips. Chips for any occasion, crackers, breads from four artisan VT bakers (Manghis, La Panciata, La Strada and Red Hen). Ice cream from VT Milk company (and Ben and Jerry’s too) and extraordinary dessert sauces to top them.
